Happy New Year - 2017 - December 31, 2016 to January 3, 2017

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2017!!!

Saturday night December 31st, 2016

This morning (7:30am) Dory and Jim left our apartment to head to the airport for their flight home (San Francisco).  We loved having them and we will miss them.  Before I write about New Years eve I wanted to mention the outstanding dinner we ate last night.

Many times when we have walked to Plaza del Ayuntamiento in the evenings we passed the Vuelve Carolina restaurant and it is ALWAYS full.  We have wanted to eat there and fortunately we were able to with Dory and Jim last night.   We had a number of different platos (dishes), from grilled octopus to pulled pork tacos and each plato got better and better.  It was the perfect night to enjoy good friends, wonderful food and goodbyes!

We choose to spend New Years eve with our good friends Jorge and Ferni at the event in Plaza del Ayuntamiento.  We had heard that no glasses were allowed, but he HAD to have cava.  We still had plastic cava glasses from our solstice party so I figured we could hide the bottles.  We brought 3 bottles as we arrived around 10:30.

What a celebration....as I have repeated numerous times the Spanish certainly know how to live life, with family and friends enjoying time together to appreciate each other.

Here is a video I took just before midnight to show all the people in the plaza, including Ferni and Jorge....on his phone!!

And a short one of some of the fireworks!

It is a Spanish tradition, since 1895 to eat "The twelve grapes of luck".  The tradition consists of eating a grape on each bell strike on midnight, as it leads to a year of prosperity.  We did this but Ferni bought small grapes, mine were a lot larger and a bit of a challenge to eat them all so quickly....but I did....next year at home we will buy the tiny champagne grapes! Another tradition is to wear red underwear....it turns out that I was able to pull this good luck off as well.  Here is a article talking about these and other New Year's eve traditions.

In the new year we have slowly started to get back into our Spanish. It has also been busy around our home as the Spanish do not give their gifts until Diá de los Reyes Magos - Three Kings Day on Friday, January 6th.  So the people have been packing the stores buying lots of gifts!
