Los Tres Reyes Magos (Three Wise Men) or Three Kings Day - Thursday and Friday, January 5 and 6, 2017

Thursday, January 5th, 2017
We joined an InterNations group meeting to eat a Roscón de Reyes or rosca de reyes (King's Ring) cake and then to watch the Los Tres Reyes Magos parade.  Instead of Santa bringing gifts on Christmas eve, the Three Wise Men/Three Kings bring them on the epiphany (tomorrow Friday, January 6).

It was the third time I've had a piece of this cake.  They are the traditional cakes for this event. However, the interior "cream" has been different in each one.  The first one, was plain whipped cream (my favorite), the second was a chocolate whipped cream, made using nutella and tonights had custard in it.  ALL cakes have little trinkets AND a bean somewhere in the cake.  You have to be careful because you could break a tooth.  In the wikipedia link above it says the "trinket" is a Baby Jesus....but all of the trinkets we have seen are either a King, which I got last night or something odd like the a baby dummie (pacifier) or even a cookie monster. Also included is a King's crown that must be worn IF you get the King.  Getting the King trinket gives you good luck in the New Year!🍀🍀🍀

My crown and my King trinket

John got the baby dummie

Wolfgang, got the bean (the booby prize) which means he had to pay for the cake!

These are the Three Kings of the "local" streets before we left for the parade.

A few photo's of some of the 30 floats and the Three Kings entering ayuntamiento.

Today is Three Kings Day and everything is closed.  There are a few restaurants open.  We met Daniel, Aida and Mariko at La Más Bonita this morning for yet another piece of Roscón de Reyes cake, this time for breakfast and a gift exchange.  I had a HUGE cup of coffer to start

Mariko got the King this morning!

Nice start to our gift giving.

When we got home we exchanged gifts. Beth gave me some fantastic shirts and a sweater from a Spanish brand called Spagnolo.  I gave her, her favorite.... joyero (jewelery) from Argimiro joyero just down the street from us....she loves it!
