Back to Spanish school, the gym and my new Synagogue! - Monday, June 27 through Sunday, July 3rd, 2016

After taking a couple of weeks of Spanish school we were starting to learn and absorb more Spanish.  We have also started to TiVo kids movies, like Cars and Finding Nemo along with movies like Erin Brockovich and for Beth Princess Diaries in Spanish with Spanish subtitles.  The challenge is, unlike kids, it's been difficult to commit the time to watch them over and over and over again.  But slowly, poco a poco, little by little we have been learning.

That said taking two weeks to go to Kenya set us back quite a bit. Thus this week was really like a review week.   Fortunately for our previous teacher, and us, she took a job at another school where she could have more consistent work.  Our school Pick Up Valencia is small and sometimes they do not even have any students.  It was fortunate for us because our new teacher, this week, went back over the basics and focused on pronunciations and helping us to try to put sentences together.  As it turned out they had no other students this week so our 9 to 12 classes, Monday through Friday, was a "private class" for us only!

Friends and family have asked us how's our Spanish. Our brains think we should be learning faster and more then we have but we have to be patient with ourselves as it takes time!!!  For the record Beth is learning more, but I can pronounce the words better...so we make good partners.

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, this week we scheduled and went to work out at the gym (Personal Gym Valencia), with our personal trainer on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  We understand about 50% of what he says.  We also think he thinks we are younger, stronger than we are either that or he is just pushing us to see where we are.  I can tell you this our muscles have been sore since we started working out....but we are loving it!

On Friday night, July 1st we were invited to visit the Synagogue that our friends Roz and Steven are members.  It is called Kol Aviv Koraj.  Now I need to be clear this is a synagogue but not in the way may of us think of a synagogue.  It is a one room flat.

The history of Jews in Spain is such that today there are very few Jews in Spain and it seems that they keep EVERYTHING a secret.  You can not find a location of a synagogue, when I called their phone numbers and wrote emails to the listed contacts I never received any responses.  Here is bit of the information on the Wikipedia link I pasted above about the Jews history in Spain:

"Spanish Jews once constituted one of the largest and most prosperous Jewish communities in the World.  This period ended definitively with the anti-Jewish riots of 1392 and Alhambra decree of 1492, as a result of which the majority of Jews in Spain (between 200,000 and 250,000) converted to Catholicism and those remaining (between 40,000 and 100,000) were forced into exile. An estimated 13,000 to 50,000 Jews live in Spain today"

Given this history I can appreciate why they are extremely small communities and very secretive.

In any case this community is much more like what I am used to back home.  With the exception that there are like only about 20 or so people.  Plus our friends invited us on a night when the Temple had a special guest Cantor, Jack Mendelson and his wife Fredda Mendelson to lead the services.  It was a wonderful evening and I think I am going to join this temple.  We even made it into their newsletter.

On Sunday, we went to see our friend Jorge play in the Championship game of his tennis tournament.  He won the first set, however his competitor started to slow the game down.  He took long breaks as Jorge stood and waited to start the next set.  He also slowed the game down by hitting a lot of lob shots over Jorge's head.  Unfortunately, while Jorge played well he lost the next two sets and the match.  We were sad that he lost, but happy that he made it to the finals!

Monday, June 20th to Sunday, June 26th

Ah, another week at home, YES!

On Monday (6.20.16) I went to the Dentist because the capped tooth next to my front teeth kept falling out.  I would "glue" it back in, it would last a week or two and then fall out again.  This happened before I left San Francisco and my Dentist glued it back in but his "glue job" only lasted a couple of months (April through May).  The Dentist said he too could glue it back in BUT it would come out again as my "real tooth" was too short to hold the cap on.  I just wanted it fixed once so I decided to have my first ever IMPLANT.
We schedule the surgery for Friday (6.24.16) and the cost will be a total of 750 Euro's......Beth had a tooth implant before we left San Francisco...I think it cost like $9,000 dollars!!!!!

This week we tried a local gym, about a block from our house.  We went for one day and as part of the gym we get a personal trainer. We liked the work out and decided that we would join effective next Monday.  We feel having scheduled appointments with a personal trainer helps motivate us to go to the gym, plus he keeps track of our workouts and moves us from machine to machine, it's great.

It was also the week of Beth's Birthday, which was on Thursday, June 23rd.  I reserved a table outside at the Marina Beach Club and enjoyed a wonderful Birthday.

As it turns out this night was a special night in Spain, it was the celebration of La Noche de San Juan.  This festival takes place on Beth's birthday every year, the 23rd of June  to celebrate the summer solstice.  Since they light bonfires on the beach after our dinner at the beach we just walked along the walkway to see everyone enjoying.

They have quite a few rituals for this evening.  Since we finished dinner around 11:30 we saw many people start to walk down towards the sea at close to mid-night.  We followed and we joined them in jumping over the waves as the clock struck 12:00.

On Friday (6.24.16) I had my implant surgery all went well.  It started at 5:00 pm and they were done by 6:30pm.  And tonight we were invited over to our best friends house Jorge and Ferni for dinner.   We could not say no so I just tried to eat soft food and on the left side of my mouth.

But they are such a wonderful couple, we had a nice dinner and they were so sweet they even bought a Birthday cake for Beth and brought it out after dinner with some candles as a surprise...so nice.

BTW I bought Beth some Sterling Silver earrings and a Sony cyber-shot HX300 camera with 50X zoom and video.  It is SO light weight and a totally awesome camera.

Valencia - Tuesday, June 14th to Sunday June 19th

After a rewarding and exciting two weeks in Kenya it was SO nice to come home and sleep in our our bed and get back into our usual routine.....shopping at the Mercado Central (Central Market) once a week, discovering Valencia, making side trip and seeing our friends.

On Thursday, June 16th we rented a car and drove North to Peniscola, aka "The Gilbralta of Valencia or the City in the Sea.

We arrived in time for lunch and were so fortunate to find an AMAZING lunch restaurant called Sebsatian en Perla Blanca Restaurante.  It was incredible food and an awesome view.

I also got another photo for my future book!

It has an fantastic Castle, I've read it is THE most photographed in Spain.  I'll ad some on my photo's later but here is a video to experience what it is like - Peniscola, Castellon, Valencia providence.  We had a great day and hope to return!

On Saturday, June 18th we walked the city past the Torres de Quart, some of the original of the 16 towers around Valencia.  There are only 2 left and Torres de Quart is one of them.

We then went into and experience the Botanical Garden of Valencia, nice but nothing to write home about. I did like a few of the plants.

On Sunday, June 19th we met our new American friends Roz and Stephen in El Cabanyal el Canyamelar.  There was a free outdoor Jazz festival in the El Cabanyal park so we just hung out and enjoyed the night.  We did meet Roz and Stephan's friends Jose and Bonnie.

Nice to be home!

Our last day in Kenya!

Since our flight is at midnight, we decided to do a few things in Nairobi today.

First we visited the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.  Is is a wonderful place for tourists to learn about why the elephants are orphans, mostly poaching or falling down a abandoned well.  While it is touristy, it is still pretty quite to see and touch the baby elephants.

Next we visited the Karen Blixen house a National Museum as she wrote the book, which was made into the movie "Out of Africa"

What would a trip be without Beth shopping for some jewelry.   This company Kazuri are hand crafted and Fair Trade, helping single women.

Great trip, now it's time to go home.  Our flight is at midnight we fly to Amsterdam, have a few hour lay over and arrive back home in Valencia on Monday, June 13th.

Drive from Masai Mar through the Riff Valley back to Nairobi - Saturday, June 10

We left Masai Mar today for our drive back over the 2 hours of washboard road as we head back to Nairobi today.  After the 65 kilometers of dirt road we are on the paved road all the way.

What is cool about this journey back to Nairobi is that we drive through the Greater Rift Valley, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It also happens to be one of the geological wonders of the world.

It is also known as the "Cradle of Humankind".  It was cool to have had this experience in Kenya.

Drive to our last Game Park, Masai Mara National Park - June 8th through the 10th

This is link is the  map of the driving we have done so far.  This drive, from Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve,  was probably the worst of all. The Masai Mara National Reserve seems to be in the middle of know where.  In order to drive here we spent over 2 hours driving on a Washboard road.

I would highly recommend that any of my friends or family who may go to this Masai Mara National Reserve that they pay the extra cost to fly in and out!

I can say that, without a doubt, the journey was worth the experience!

We stayed in the Sarova Mara Game Club "Tents".  They are so luxurious that it's hard to call them tents.

As a side note in each of the 3 Safari locations we have visited the camps shut down their generators usually from 2pm to 6pm and again from 12am until 6am to save power.   Just after midnight, on Thursday, June 9th, we received a "Whats App" message that my brother, Dean, had a tear in his aorta (Aortic dissection).  I did not sleep for the entire night. I sent healing energy and prayed that he would live.

In the morning, with the power restored we received the positive news we had prayed for....surgery went well, the surgeons saved his life.  He was within minutes of not being with us.  Thank goodness for miracles!

This Masai Mara National Reserve is AMAZING, while at times it can get overrun with tourists, it is MASSIVE and is best known for:
the Wildebeest Migration, the HUGE savannas of golden grasslands, big skies and Lion sightings.

Our one-eye male Lion, checking us out.  Look at this "The Gate with Brian Cohen" blog link I found with close up photo's

I have to work on blowing this image up, but wanted to get it on the blog, leopard eating a antelope in the Masai Mara National Reserve

During our visit it was the beginning of the build up of the Wildebeest, (this link shows a month by month details. They are famous for the migration!

Lake Nakuru, Lion Hill Game Lodge - Tuesday, June 7th

We left Samburu, after only one night, because we were traveling with the founder of GNU Foundation, James Sempre, and he planned to see the thousands of Flamingo's at the Lake Nakuru National Park "The bird watchers paradise" in the greater Riff Valley.

BTW we spent this evening and tomorrow evening in the lovely Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge

Well it turns out that we saw maybe 3 flamingo's.  We were curious as to why, was it the right time and season?  Actually January and February are the best time as it is the dry/hot season. With higher levels precipitation it decreases the alkalinity and there is less algae for the flamingo's to eat.  So the lake water was too high! We did see ducks, pelican's and other birds but not the masses of flamingo Jim had hoped to see.

We did see something we had never seen before, even when we went to Botswana.....we saw the Lake Nakuru rhinoceros.

Of course we saw zebra.  But we noticed that a lot of different animals had either babies or rather young ones.

Here are a few more of the birds we saw and some other photo's.

These are Vervet Monkeys

You might be able to notice that these Rothschild's giraffe's are different from the Reticulated giraffe's (Rothschild resemble Masai giraffes)

Can you see the difference?
