I love Baseball

Last night Beth went to the game with me to see the Giants play the Philadelphia Phillies.  The pitching match up was Matt Cain vs. Cliff Lee.  It was a game that I will certainly remember for some time.  Both pitchers threw a shutout through 9 innings (Cliff Lee also pitched the 10th).  Both pitchers were incredibly efficient, Matt threw 91 pitches (64 for strikes) and Cliff 102 (81 for strikes).  Had either team scored the game would have finished in 1 hour and 49 minutes, unheard of!  At one point Matt retired 17 straight hitters.  So with his opening day almost Perfect Game (he gave up only 1 hit to the pitcher!) and last nights 2 hitter he's pitched 18 innings at home giving up 0 runs and only 3 hits.

In the top of the 11th the Phillies catcher Ruiz leads off the inning with a double, then bunted over to 3rd with only one out.  The Phillies brought in pinch hitter Jim Thome the Giants countered with Javier Lopez. All Thome has to do to drive home the run from 3rd is to hit a fly to the outfield, something he's done a million times in his career.......Lopez strikes him out and the Giants get the last out on a difficult ground out 6-3 (Crawford to Belt).

So Crawford leads off the 11th with a K, Brandon Belt then gets a single off the tough lefty Bastardo, Angel Pagan gets on due to an E-5 (error on the 3rd baseman) we we have 2 on with one out and Melky Cabrera comes up and the Milk Man delivers everyone to the MelkyWay......his single drives in the only run and we win in a walk off 1-0!
