Cerros de Terciopelo - Rosario de Lerna to Cafayate - Saturday, October 12, 2013

After another "Dulce de leche & apple pie" breakfast we left for our journey to Cafayate.  This was another day of driving as this is 115 miles southwest of Salt, so it took us about 3 hours.  Thanks to the microclimate and fertile soil, Cafayate and the surrounding are is one of Argentina's booming wine-growing regions.

However it was how beautiful the drive was on the drive to Cafayate that blew us away.  We entered the Quebrada de las Conchas with various rock formations that have been eroded into wildly different shapes.  The climax is the Amphitheather which is sometimes used as a venue for proper orchestras thanks to its outstanding natural acoustics.

What a beautiful and magnificent place.  It felt a little like a combination of Escalante, Utah, Bryce and Zion National Parks with a new and upcoming Wine industry.  We had lunch at a Winery called Piatelli's

It's SO beautiful!
We decided that since this was our last night in the Salta area, after visiting Cafayate we would drive into Salta for a nice dinner.  As we drove back it started to rain and as we approached Salta many ambulances pasted us.  Since the main highways are one lane in each direction there must have been a head on collision as we came to a police officer who spoke to us in Spanish (which of course we did not understand) and told us to take a detour, which we had no idea where to go)  we kind of followed a bus and did make it into Salta.  We eat at a wonderful restaurant called Jose Balcarce restaurant in which we had an excellent dinner, then back to our hotel for our last night in Rosario De Lema!
