Sydney, Australia - The Rocks - 1st day Sunday, September 6th

g'day, me old cobbler, me mate.....and yes it is a good day.

Today is the start of our 20th Wedding Anniversary vacation in Australia.  Actually the start of our holiday began on the flights from Oakland to Honolulu and then to Sydney.  Given the amount of travel we have both done for work over the years, we used frequent flyer miles to book first class flights.  Let me tell you how "ace" (wonderful) 1st class is when you are flying almost 17 hours!!!

I am going to use a fair dinkum (True, genuine) Aussie dictionary so I can incorporate the Aussie English in my blog.

After an ace Sunday breakkie (breakfast) at the Park Hyatt Sydney we started our day in The Rocks area which is where our hotel is.  On Sundays there is a The Rocks Market. We love outdoor markets and try to see them where ever we travel.

From here we started to wander around The Rocks and came across Miller's Point.  A protest movement developed here in 2008 when various governments announced plans to lease and sell Millers Point properties and move the existing Public Housing tenants, thus started the "Save Miller's Point" movement.

As we continued on our walk we discovered the Grand Opening Celebration of Barangaroo.  Barangaroo began as a place of cultural significance and natural beauty for Sydney's Indigenous people, and is named after Barangaroo, the Cammeraygal woman at the time of the early colonial settlement who was a key figure in the local Aboriginal culture and community.  The place evolved over time into an industrial and maritime district and now is being transformed into a thriving public, residential and commercial precinct with a stunning headland park, Barangaroo Reserve at it's Northern tip.

We enjoyed the music, the art display and the general vibe as this was ALL local's....not a tourist event.

We were then "up a gum tree" (confused, not sure what to do).  I wanted to go to the Lord Nelson Pub ...Sydney's Oldest pub for some "neck oil" (common term for beer).

I got the 4 glass taster with Three Sheets (my favorite), Nelson's Blood, Old Admiral and Victory bitter....brilliant!

In the pub we met Ian and Sue.  They invited us to join them for lunch at the The Australian Hotel as they told us they had the BEST pizza with sliced duck, I have to admit it was pretty awesome.  It was also here that Beth found HER BEER...check it out...not the Mountain Goat...that's for you Ophelia...it's the Fancy Pants!

We then walked back to our hotel at dusk, and I took what will be the first of many photo's you will see of the iconic Sydney Opera House and "the coat hanger" (Sydney Harbour Bridge).

Great first day.....I hope to catch up soon!
